T. Morton & Co. Custom Wood Flooring —
A Personal Expression
Lancaster, PA (Spring 2006) – Our wood floors are a reflection of the people who buy them as well as those who craft them. Whether specified by a designer or architect, or by the consumer himself, these floors are made by craftsmen one floor at a time.
Some recent requests include:
On the Domestic front:
Steamed Birch – Steamed Birch calls northern Canada home – by the St. Lawrence Seaway, where the growing season is short, the temperatures are cool and the soil, perfect for this species to thrive. Color-wise, it’s on the lighter side, with light reddish-brown heartwood giving way to a pale sapwood.
Hand Sculpted Maple – This Canadian Maple comes from northern “maple leaf” country, along Canada’s St. Lawrence Seaway, where the growing season is short and cool and the soil rich – perfect conditions for this species to thrive. This Maple’s flesh is much whiter (but finished with a darker custom wipe) and the wood far denser than its southern cousins. Its texture is fine and even.
Walnut – A North American classic, Walnut runs the tone gamut, from a deep and rich dark brown and black heartwood with hints of purple, to a near white and tan. It is finished with a custom bleaching treatment and a custom wipe for a unique look. But we’ll seek out the tonal combination that’s to your liking. Used for centuries in gun stocks to gun cabinets, this straight- and open-grained wood makes fine furniture of floors.
Cherry – Possibly one of the most popular woods of North America…it gained its fame because of its combination of fine texture, wavy but even grain and goldish color. Mahogany may be its only rival for look and feel. When this medium hard wood is finished, it can take on a mesmerizing quality unlike that of other woods.
From far off lands:
Afrormosia (Natural Wash) – A wood that is Central and West Africa’s answer to Teak. This fine and even textured wood has been nicknamed ‘African Satinwood’ and African Teak. Mostly straight-grained and quite hard, its fresh-milled color is a golden “teaky” tan, but quickly darkens to a medium brown.
Bubinga (Natural Wash) – African Rosewood--this pinky red, hard and strong species hails from the central and western regions of the “dark continent”. Bubinga’s mix of straight and interlocking grains and its irregular brown-red gum lines add a wild look. Its intriguing coloration darkens with age to a burgundy red.
Knotty Caribbean Pine (Natural Wash) – In the islands, they build boats with it. So you can imagine how right Caribbean Heart Pine is as a floor. With color drama ranging from light tan to dark brown, it’s the perfect canvas for a look of tradition – or a clean, contemporary style, for that matter. And its hardness rivals that of oak.
Sapele (Natural Wash) – It’s Mahogany’s East African cousin. In fact, some call it African Mahogany. Our Sapele is a rich reddish-brown, with even richer, darker bands. The variegation created gives our Sapele a playful vibrancy, and it’s harder than Oak.
Reclaimed treasures:
Recovered Antique Pine – Slightly dark and brooding, this reworked antique wood takes on an unsurpassed beauty and becomes more gorgeous with age. What a way to age gracefully…the quality and the texture of this wood is everlasting.
Recovered Antique Oak – Fumed to reveal a warm patina, this antique wood is lovelier with time. A playful mix of light and dark gives the wood a tranquil quality of a time long gone by. Gently dried over decades, the texture becomes deep and crisp at the same time.
